Topic 1c, How to run the bow

We always start bowing with a pull. This rule applies regardless of the tala – rhythmic cycle – and is only ignored in a handful of cases which you will become familiar with as you learn.

The 1 inch rule.

When bowing, until such a time that you become very confident with the bow, you must leave an inch at the tail end and the grip end of the bow. In other words, stop the bow an inch before the end. If you cross this and go too far, your bow will fall off the string and/or create a screeching sound.

Keep an inch at either end of the bow. Keep an inch between the bridge and the point where the bow touches the string

As you bow, the bow must maintain a straight line across the string horizontal to the ground. It must not move up or down or change position from the horizontal axis into a diagonal position. If either of these happen, the bow will emit a screeching sound. In the same way, the bow should not begin rotating around the axis of the shaft. As you bow, ensure the bow does not touch your body, the body of the instrument, or another string.

  5. Shaft axis. No rotating.
  6. No circular movement. Avoiding your body, the body of the saaj, and the sa string.

Consider sitting in front of a mirror and watching yourself bowing to see if the bowing is right.
